Preparing for the Winter Season
“A Towel. [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.”-- Douglas Adams.
When temperatures are starting to drop and the leaves are changing color, it is time to prepare for winter. On the truck this usually involves switching out all our clothes for winter ones, removing any that are too small and making repairs to any that need it. It also involves bringing more blankets on the truck and a few extra sweaters and re-thinking the kinds of food that need to be stored on the truck. Towels are also a great idea, particularly if you work on a flat-bed truck.
Adding in the baby to your calculations for winter is pretty straight forward. Like adults you will need get rid of any overly summery clothes (short sleeves, shorts, etc) and replacing them with warm ones (pants, sweaters, extra socks, shoes). I recommend keeping the usual onesies and then adding in some warm winter pants and a couple of coats. He or she will need a hat and a couple of pairs of gloves, lots of extra socks, one or two pairs of winter boots to help keep those little feet warm. Other than that I recommend extra blankets - you can never have enough blankets!
At home I store all the clothes I am not using for the season in one of the large Walmart plastic storage boxes - it has never done me wrong.]
I also added in medicine during the winter seasons. I make sure I have a bottle of cold medicine, pain killer and allergy medication ready to go for the little one at any time.
