There are some locations that do not allow children on their premises for safety and mostly legal reasons. This makes it really interesting when a trucker has a child on board and is suddenly forced to make a really tough decision.
What are my options?
Reject the load
If you know you are going to a port location try and reject the load before it becomes a problem. Explain to your dispatcher (if they are reasonable) the reason why and I am sure they will understand.
Work with the load
Accept the load and drop one parent and the child of at a nearby truck stop (if there are two of you) and be prepared for a long day. Try to ensure that the parent and child will have access to a truckers lounge and decent food, because port locations can take awhile to get around to loading their trucks.
